panel 18

Panel number: 18

Petition Sheet Number: 6

Person honouring: Barbara McLeod

Relationship to makers: None

This panel is stitched to honour all those women who, in 1893, were illiterate but still determined to participate in the petition and signed, with assistance, by making their mark, most commonly an X.  For many, this probably meant admitting their illiteracy which, in itself, may have been quite traumatic.  Hidden within the circles on this panel are many small X – to represent the women of this time living with a hidden disability.

In particular, this honours Barbara McLeod of Carterton who made her mark (X) on Sheet 6 of the petition.

Panel materials: Embroidery floss. Cotton fabric. Millefiori embroidery technique.
