Janet Manson was born in Kains Hill, Lyttelton, Christchurch in December 1856, the daughter of Jean and Samuel Manson Sr. She went to school at the head of the bay. 

Janet married Arthur Joseph Domett Parkinson in St Peters Church, Teddington in March 1883. They had seven children – five boys and two girls.

In 1893, Janet signed the suffrage petition along with 58 others from around Lyttelton habour.

Arthur went bankrupt in 1884 and died in 1943, aged 83; he had survived Janet, who died in 1932, aged 75.
