Amy Nicholas was born in St Austell, Cornwall in October 1840.

I don’t know when she came to New Zealand but at age 28, in January 1868, she married John Frater who came from Scotland.

Her father was farming near Waikouaiti when Amy signed the suffrage petition.

Amy and John had 10 children and lived in Livingstone, North Otago in their cottage, The Moorings, which is still in use.

Amy was widowed in 1883 at age 43 – her husband died due to an accident while working his mine. With very little money, she managed to bring up her family.

In September 1909 she moved to Dee St, Oamaru. She died here in February 1926.
