Emily Ann Long was born in 1861 in Eaglehawk, Victoria, Australia. She moved to New Zealand where she married John Logie in 1882.

At the time of the petition, Emily, known as Emma, was living in South Dunedin. She had four children, a son and three daughters. Their only son, William Harkness Logie, died age seven and Ethel Eliza Jane Logie did not survive childhood.

The Logie family also lived in Christchurch before moving to New Plymouth in 1911. There Emily worked as a domestic servant and John was a railway engine man. The Logie family home in Hine Street is still there and the family grave site is at the Te Henui Cemetery. Emily was 78 when she died in 1939.
