panel 354

Panel number: 354

Petition sheet number: 423

Person honouring: M. Kelly

Relationship to maker: Paternal great-grandmother [assumed]

Mary Kelly, married to William McCrossin, came to New Zealand from County Tyrone, Ireland. Mary was living in Broomhedge Street, Wellington at the time she signed the 1893 petition.

She and William later settled in Upper Hutt, and had many children, including my paternal grandfather, Michael Joseph McCrossin.

Mary died in Wellington in 1916.

Panel materials: I used 100% cotton embroidered fabric from an old tablecloth I purchased at a vintage fabric fair. I added some lace flowers I had in my stash from my Nana. The photos were printed on inkjet fabric sheets and sewn to the panel. The hand-embroidered feather stitches were stitched around the already embroidered flowers. I enlarged Mary’s signature from the petition and embroidered it in satin stitch in ‘kelly green’ thread.
