Matilda Lucy Newing was born in 1862, the eldest daughter of Edward and Phoebe Newing who had arrived in Auckland on the sailing ship Persia in 1860.

In 1890 Matilda married George John Silcock, a poultry farmer from Okoia, Whanganui. Their first child, Dorothy Clara was born in 1898 but she died one month later. They had two more children: Arthur Wharrie and Winnifred Madge, both born in 1901.

In 1915 the family left Okoia and by 1919 they were living at 11 Stark St, Whanganui East, where George was listed as a fruit broker. The family, which included their unmarried daughter Winnifred, stayed at this address for the remainder of their lives.

Matilda died in 1944, three years after George.
