Naomi Pritchard was born in Chatham, Kent, England in 1853. On the 25th December 1872 at Greenwich, South East London, England, she married William Henry Warren, a carpenter. In 1874, at the age of 21, she emigrated to Otago on the “Sussex”.

An excerpt from The Otago Daily Times, July 1874 when the “Sussex” berthed: Captain Strap - I have conveyed a great many emigrants to various places in my time" said Captain Strap, “but a better class, taking them all through, than those I have now on board I never travelled with”. Thus the ship arrives with 487 souls, equal to 398 statute adults. This number comprises 56 single women, 100 single men, and 78 married couples with their children, the number of the latter being estimated at about 100. We give those numbers as they were supplied us on board; but there is a discrepancy between their total and the total number of souls - possibly a score or two of children were overlooked. They brought a capital recommendation with them, in the shape of a clean ship. We never inspected a cleaner [if so clean] single women’s compartment as that on board the Sussex, and the married people’s and single men’s places were also in very commendable condition. The berths were arranged in blocks, with side-alleys in the married people’s compartment, and the ventilation in each was good, with however, barely enough light.

Naomi and William lived all their lives in Melbourne street, South Dunedin and had five children; William, Maude, Jessie, Leonard, Ethel and Mabel. She lived in a household well versed with social, political and economic affairs of the day and discussed them freely with her husband who was heavily involved in the trade union movement and the introduction of the eight hour working day. The women descendants from Naomi’s son Leonard are continuing to benefit from her signing the petition today: Nancie Jones (Warren): 7.1.1943 Lois Milner (Warren) 27.11.1944 Dallas Hoskin (Warren) 28.3.1954 Robyn Clarke (Milner) 26.4.1967 Sharyn Jones 30.12 1971 Susan Bonnar (Warren) 21.7.1976Nicola Warren 1.10.1978 Jessica Wolfenden (Warren) 16.1977 Toni Warren 26.3.1972 Victoria Hoskin 15.1.1980 Catherine Warren 13.7.1998 Madison Milner 6.5.1998 Zoe Warren 25.01.2000 Stephanie Bonnar 28.11.2005 Mya Wolfenden 27.4.2006 Amy Simpson 27.3.2011 Gabrielle Warren 16.2.2013 Ruby Hall 22.9.2018
