Panel number: 57

Petition Sheet Number: 53

Person honouring: Mary Jamieson

Relationship to makers: Mother’s great-aunt

The family were from County Donegal. Mary Jamieson’s age was given as 12 but she may have been younger when she left Glasgow in May 1874 and arrived in Port Chalmers 80 days later aboard the Mairi Bhan. The voyage was ‘destitute of incidents’.

The Jamieson family settled in George Street and in 1893 Mary, her sister Margaret (Mrs Lester, Purakunui), and their mother Margaret signed sheet 53. The handwriting is the same for all three; I think it is probably Mary’s.

In 1895, unmarried and with both parents dead, Mary received 60 pounds, 18 shillings and 2 pence from the will of Louie Eugene Alex Thuilleaux, an elderly George Street neighbour.

On 20 September 1895, one month after Louie was buried, John and Margaret Jamieson were disinterred. They are now buried in Plot 9, Block 170 at the Northern Cemetery Dunedin. Presumably Mary used her inheritance for this.

Panel materials: I don’t usually sew so I had to buy threads. I tea dyed the map. The buttons and lace come from my late mother’s sewing box. Photo is the Jack/Anderson Wedding - Goodwood 1909. Mary’s sister Rebecca seated the groom Mary’s nephew and to his right and behind Mary’s nieces and nephews.
