Panel number: 61

Petition Sheet Number: 55

Person honouring: Margaret Gregory and Dr Elizabeth Gregory

Relationship to makers: Great-aunt, my grandfather’s sister

Margaret Isabella Gregory (nee Warnock), born in Armarghbreague, Ireland in April 1941, emigrated firstly to Melbourne, Australia and later to Dunedin. It is possible that she met her future husband in Melbourne and they travelled to Dunedin where they eventually married. Her sister Martha also travelled to New Zealand with her.

The family owned several houses in Dunedin including one in Duncan Street. Mrs Gregory ran a grocery store in Elm Row. (Several ladies from Elm Row also signed the same page of the petition and this panel is recognition of them as well).

The Gregorys had seven children including William Edgar Gregory who married Catherine Cameron. William and Catherine had five children including my grandfather Oliver Gregory and Elizabeth Gregory. Elizabeth made a name for herself in education, eventually becoming professor of home science at Otago University. Through the generations, the strength of the women who came before us has shaped the women my mother, my daughter and myself have become. They had strong beliefs around family, faith, education and an amazing work ethic. They were all craftswomen, providing for their families and their homes. I am proud to continue the family traditions. Mrs Duncan from Panel 54 is also linked to the Gregory family through her daughter Roberta who married Oliver Gregory.

Panel materials: Fabrics came from my quilting collection. 100% cotton. Most were leftovers from previous projects. Nothing bought specifically for this project. Glass beads.
