Helen Anderson was born on 25 May 1825 in Renfrew, Renfrewshire, Scotland. She married Millar Anderson on the 9 September 1844 in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, Scotland. 

Helen and Millar had five children while they were still in Scotland before emigrating in 1856 on the Southern Cross. They arrived in Dunedin and owned a bakery on High Street. They had six more children. Helen passed away on 11 January 1901, aged 75.
