Relationship to maker: Great-great-grandmother

Caroline Hoy was born in Great Dunmow, Exeter, in the United Kingdom on 26 October 1849. She moved to Somerset to work as a servant.

Caroline met and married Harry Jackways in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset in 1875. The first of their seven children (my great-grandfather), was born that year. In 1876 the family of three left Gravesend, England to sail to New Zealand on the Wiltshire, arriving in Lyttelton in 1877. They settled in Gore where the couple had six more children. Harry was a rabbiter and labourer; Caroline cooked, grew a garden, entered in the local shows, and brought up the children.

Panel materials: Old cotton sheet for the background. Photo transferred to calico, then embellished with black fabric and a gingham apron. My great-grandmother, Thirza (Caroline’s daughter-in-law) did beautiful crocheting and I added a doily of her work to my panel. I used pink and blue buttons from my mother’s collection (Caroline’s great-granddaughter) to depict the seven children.
